Description: Reef is a forward-looking investigation into the application of dynamic surfaces in architecture. In Ley and Stein's ambitious installation, hundreds of flexible 'fins' move in response to the presence of the visitor. The complex motion is more animal than mechanical, suggestive of tree boughs in wind, or sea anemones in ocean currents.

Our Role:Motion control software development and custom electronics

We created custom software to analyze the location of viewers as they move through the installation and compute the complex responses imagined by Ley and Stein, as well as the custom electronics and communication protocol which drive the shape memory alloy-actuated fins.
